🌿 How to Germinate Cycas Revoluta Bulbs

Growing Cycas Revoluta from a bulb requires patience, but the results are worth it. Follow these simple steps to ensure successful germination:

Step-by-Step Germination Guide:

  • Soaking: Soak the bulb in lukewarm water for 24–48 hours to soften the outer shell.
  • Soil Preparation: Use a well-draining mix of sand, garden soil, and compost. A mix of 50% sand, 30% garden soil, and 20% compost works best.
  • Planting Depth: Place the bulb in the soil, ensuring at least 1/3 of it remains above the surface.
  • Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist but avoid overwatering, as it can cause rot.
  • Germination Period: The bulb may take 2–6 months to sprout, depending on climate conditions.

🌞 How to Grow Cycas Revoluta in Indian Climate

Best Growing Conditions:

  • Climate: Suitable for tropical, subtropical, and even semi-arid regions.
  • Seasons: Best planted in early summer or monsoon for optimal growth.
  • Sunlight: Requires 6–8 hours of direct or partial sunlight daily.
  • Soil Type: Prefers well-draining, sandy or loamy soil with a pH of 6.0–7.5.
  • Container vs. Ground Planting: Ideal for both pots and garden beds. Use a 10–12-inch pot for best results in balconies or terraces.

🌿 How to Care for Your Sago Palm

Watering & Fertilization:

  • Water once a week in summers and once in two weeks in winters.
  • Feed with a slow-release nitrogen-rich fertilizer every 3–4 months.
  • Use organic compost or cow dung manure for healthy growth.

Sunlight & Temperature:

  • Requires bright, indirect sunlight if grown indoors.
  • Can withstand high summer temperatures but should be protected from frost in northern India.

Pruning & Maintenance:

  • Trim yellow or damaged fronds to maintain its beautiful shape.
  • Avoid excessive handling, as the leaves can be sharp.

Far from enthralling, but I did learn
Format: Paperback
This book was a disappointment. It looked like exactly what I was looking for: an overview of the history, society, and culture of Egypt from ancient to modern times that wasn't 500+ pages long. I did learn a fair bit of information, but unfortunately, the book is far from "enthralling." It reads like a high school student's book report. In addition, it sometimes just throws terms out there with no explanation, and I found myself having to consult Google. For example, it says "Since hieroglyphs were difficult to create, the Egyptians developed hieretic writing, which was a type of cursive script. Later, demotic writing was developed for ordinary documents." What is demotic writing? How is it different from hieretic? The book doesn't even provide a picture. I had to go to Wikipedia to find out what these things are. This book needs slightly more detail and an author with better writing style / storytelling abilities. That said, it still may be the best short introduction available.
