With its beautifully worn surfaces and time-softened corners, this extra large 19th century French breadboard from Avignon, in the heart of Provence, is a striking example of rustic utility elevated by age and authenticity. Crafted from a single slab of hardwood, circa 1830s, its generous proportions and substantial thickness speak to its original role in a busy provincial kitchen — likely resting on a farmhouse table where loaves were shaped, sliced, and served daily.
One side bears a warm, faded brown tone while the reverse has mellowed to a cool gray, a dual patina earned over more than a century of use. The oblong rectangular shape with subtly beveled corners and integrated handle offers both visual charm and tactile appeal. There's evidence there was once a hole for hanging, but it has since been filled, perhaps it was best stored flat because of the weight.
French breadboards like this one have a long tradition, especially in the south of France, where artisans and home cooks alike relied on durable, handmade boards to prepare crusty boules, fruit-laced fougasses, and other regional breads. Today, this antique Provençal breadboard or cutting board makes an irresistible display piece for a French country kitchen or a dramatic charcuterie presentation. *Shown with additional antique breadboards, each sold separately. This listing is for the featured board only.
